Butchery Bledisloe Challenge set down

Five of New Zealand’s best butchers will face off against five of the best Australians in an inaugural Trans-Tasman test match next March.

Nominations are now open as Retail Meat New Zealand tries to locate the nation’s best butchers. Retail Meat New Zealand Manager, Fiona Greig, says the competition, sponsored by Beef + Lamb New Zealand Inc. and Meat and Livestock Australia, offers Kiwi butchers a chance to showcase their skills.

“Butchers are passionate about their craft and love a challenge so combining this with a test against Australia seems like a winning formula,” says Greig.

The team will have to turn a side of beef and a whole lamb into a winning display within two hours.

The New Zealand team will be managed by industry stalwart Todd Heller, founder of Hellers Smallgoods.

Nominations can be made by those within the meat industry and close on Friday 26 November, 2010.

The competition will run at the Retail Meat New Zealand conference in Christchurch on March 25, 2011.
